Dr. Michael S. Gayle, Ed.D.C.T., is an accomplished education leader, curriculum and program administrator, author, and musician whose work brings together educational leadership, curriculum development, music, and organizational innovation. With extensive experience across education, higher education, curriculum design, and the performing arts, Dr. Gayle is committed to creating learning environments and programs that develop the whole learner and translate educational vision into meaningful, measurable outcomes.

Born in Stuttgart, Germany, to Caribbean parents and raised in the United States, Dr. Gayle brings a rich multicultural perspective to his work. His connection to music began at the age of four, when he taught himself to play the melodica. By eleven, he was performing saxophone at school and community events. That early foundation grew into a lifelong career as a musician, composer, educator, and advocate for the transformative power of music education.

As an education professional, Dr. Gayle developed Gayle Formation Theory®, a K–12 framework for curriculum design, assessment, and organizational leadership that translates broad learner outcomes into structured instructional and evaluation systems. The framework serves as the foundation for the curriculum, educational programs, assessment systems, implementation resources, and professional learning materials he has developed for schools, districts, and public-sector partners.

Dr. Gayle's scholarship explores the connections between education, music, cognition, ethics, leadership, and entrepreneurship. His publications and presentations include Cognitive Harmonics: Unveiling the Entrepreneurial Potential of Music Education (Columbia University, 2025), Designing a Template (The College Music Society Symposium, 2024), Social Constructs:  An Examination of Modern Ethics in the Western World, and Music Made Me This Way: How Music Education Builds the Mind of an Entrepreneur. Gayle Formation Theory® Handbook and Facilitator Guide, a 14-volume Domain Implementation Series, as well as the developer of the Student Formation Index™ and the Gayle Solutions Practitioner Certification Framework.

His academic background reflects this interdisciplinary approach. Dr. Gayle holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Performance (Composition) from Adelphi University, a Master of Music in Film Scoring & Multimedia from New York University, and a Master of Music and Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. He also holds a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.C.T.).

Throughout his career, Dr. Gayle has taught and lectured at institutions including St. John's University, Columbia University, and the Manhattan School of Music. He currently serves as Jazz Band Director at St. John's University, where he combines his expertise as an educator and musician to mentor and develop the next generation of musicians. As a musician, Dr. Gayle is a multi-instrumentalist proficient in saxophone, piano, organ, and keyboard. His creative work spans Caribbean/Jazz, Gospel, Contemporary Christian, and Classical music. Influenced by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Dave Koz, and David Sanborn, his musical style incorporates Caribbean and jazz elements with classic 1980s textures to create a sound that is both contemporary and timeless.

Dr. Gayle is also the founder and CEO of Michael S. Gayle Media Inc., providing entertainment and production services that extend his work in music and creative media. 

 

Dr. Gayle continues to perform regularly during Sunday services at Zion Cathedral, where his musicianship reflects both technical excellence and deep spiritual expression.
